Strike of 2010

It is very said for our education to be taking a down ward turn instead of going forward, our government is the one to blame. Just think about the matric results for 2010. According to me they are going to be a disaster taking in to consideration the amount of time that we lost during the world cup.

You know it is a very sad and solemn situation for our learners. The tragedy is that the poorest of the poor is the worst affected. The only winners are the government because they will put the deducted salaries to some other use. We must also learn to act proactively when we strike. I think the most teachers knew of the strike that was coming. There are teachers at our school who did extra work prior to the strike and I guess the impact of the strike will be less damaging on the learners and more damaging to their pockets. It was their choice though and I salute them. I also do not accept the governments offer, but our primary teachers need to work with them every day because after a months holiday and the strike, we will have chaos. The timing of the stike forced me not to strike. I have a grade four class, but I worked with the Grade 7 and grade 5 learners also to return a favour to their teachers who stand up for us.

  2. I feel as a parent you knew your child is in Grade 12 this year, you had to jump out long before the strike to get some extra help or keep on sitting with your child because they have revision books .old exam papers and even their text books have a questions and answer sections in. Please do not blame the strike if your child do not know how to use his or her time . This was good, it gave the leaner more time to catch up or to revise his or her work . Many times I think that the teachers at certain schools exspecialy in matric over load the learners with learning materials and do not focus enough on what the learner surpose to know. They should teach the learners time management skills or they need time management skills because by now it just surpose to be revision all the way

  3. When balloting members on whether to strike or not I think teachers should cast their votes to the unions directly so that there can be a record of how every member has voted. As a union representative at my school I have found that members who voted in favour of an indefinite strike never left their classrooms for one single day after it had been determined by the votes to embark on a four day strike only. Fair?
